| PLEASE REMEMBER FIRST AND FOREMOST THAT YOU ARE CHOOSING A CAT! All kittens are adorable, but the kitten stage is brief and your decision must be based on the adult animal. During my time in rescue, both private and for the CPL, numerous pedigrees came into my care. Some for very genuine reasons such as the death of an owner, but many arrived simply beacuse they behaved in a manner typical of the breed! One was dumped for constantly returning with dead animals ............. breed trait: a wide ranging hunter! Another, because it always jumped on counters, computer desks etc ........... breed trait: wants to get in on every act! |
Be sure that you are choosing a cat that fits your lifestyle, with breed traits you can live with. The whole array of possible breeds can be seen at The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy website ........... |
| When you contact the breeder, please do not be offended if lots of questions are asked.!! Reputable breeders devote considerable time and expense in raising happy healthy kittens, and wish them to be placed in homes where they will be loved for life ........... so be prepared to talk about who you are, and what your lifestyle is like. The breeder should also be happy to answer your questions! We tend to lead very busy lives and if you have called at an inconvenient time you may have to wait to chat, but then ...... ask away! Arrange to visit but do not expect to come away with a kitten. Most breeders will wish to meet you at least once before homing. Governing Council guidelines advise that kittens should not be homed before the age of 13 weeks If you require more help, please visit the GCCF website and view all their pages on Choosing a Kitten |
Having made a considered decision, where do you go from there? As mentioned, the best way is to visit a show, and talk to breeders. If this is not possible, go to the GCCF Club Page Select a Siamese club, and on their website look for "Kitten List" (or look under Committee, for the kitten list advisor) This person will not usually be able to recommend any one breeder but can tell you where kittens are currently available, and give you a contact number |
Happy, bouncing kittens who come forward to interact with you (after some initial, normal, feline caution Kittens should be happy about being handled |
, which can be read - in full - at the GCCF website, They should be happy to discuss with you all aspects of kitten care and diet. The ethics are written for both breeders AND owners ........ you, also, will have a duty of care |

When you are ready to collect your kitten breeders belonging to the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy will supply you with registration papers, a full pedigree, vaccination card showing a full course of vaccinations, and recommendations for diet. |
You should always expect to see Mum although if the breeder does not own the stud, it will not be possible to meet the father. Surroundings should be adequately warm, comfortable and above all CLEAN! Eyes and noses should be free of any mucous, and you should not see coughing or sneezing ........ kittens that look unwell, probably are unwell! Choosing the kitten who chooses you is often a sensible way to make a difficult choice! |
